Did an Eye Patch Grab an Oscar for the Duke?

John Wayne, the most iconic American actor of the 20th century, made almost 200 movies. Near the end of that run, without a single Oscar to his name, he played an aging, drunk, US marshal named Rooster J. Cogburn in the movie True Grit. The script called for him to wear an eye patch, but Wayne refused to do it. Each day when he came into the dressing room for rehearsals the eye patch was sitting there on the top of the pile. Finally, after a few days he tried it on and found it was rigged so although black to the audience he could see out of it perfectly. He decided to give it a try. In his Oscar speech a year later, having just won Best Actor, as he took the stand and tried to maintain his composure, the first words out of his mouth were, “If I’d have known that would have got me this, I’d have put that patch on 35 years ago!”
